PEER SUPPORT SPECIALIST CERTIFICATION

HEADER 1

This certification program is designed to prepare applicants to become a Certified Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist (CMPSS). The program will address the seventeen competencies by providing education about the recovery model and process, trauma informed care, mental health, substance use/abuse, co- occurring diagnosis, relapse and crisis planning, maintaining wellness, goal development, boundaries, client led approaches, advocacy, stigma, and the significance of culture and community.

The program will be led by WestCoast Children’s Clinic mental health providers who have peer and/or clinical experience. Providers will discuss theories and skills related to mental health and substance use/abuse that will support the work of the prospective CMPSS. Prospective CMPSS will have the opportunity to reflect and practice knowledge through group discussions, role playing, scenarios, and other interactive activities.

HEADER 2

Qualifications to become a CMPSS:

  1. Be at least 18 years of age.

  2. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent degree. 

  3. Be self-identified as having experience with the process of recovery from a mental illness or substance use disorder, either as a consumer of these services or as the parent, caregiver, or family member of a consumer.

  4. Be willing to share your experience. 

  5. Have a strong dedication to recovery. 

  6. Agree, in writing, to adhere to the Code of Ethics. 

  7. Successfully complete the training requirements for a Peer Support Specialist. 

  8. Pass the certification examination approved by DHCS for a Peer Support Specialist.

The certification program includes 80 hours of training which is delivered using a hybrid model of in- person and online components.

After the completion of the certification training, participants will receive a certificate of completion.
